What is Gestalt?

Gestalt psychotherapy focuses on the awareness of the individual in relation to the environment. Awareness leads to honoring one’s sensations and allows for a choice between the authentic feeling self in the present moment, or the learned mind concepts of social behavior. Without awareness there is no choice and without choice there is no change.

In the practice of Gestalt Therapy, the therapist utilizes “experiments” to bring about appropriate experiences and authentic feelings to encourage the completion of unfinished past emotional business with parents, siblings and other significant relationships. During “experiments”, the volume of emotional release spontaneously increases and change takes place instantaneously. Clients grow and change rapidly through many “ahas” or “gestalts” which take place naturally in every session. A “gestalt” is a sudden, deeply intuitive awareness felt in the body; also known as a completion. The client now becomes energized as past emotional blocks are removed and new energy can now flow. A new health and state of well-being are present. Through a variety of Gestalt techniques, the client finishes his/her past business and becomes rooted in awareness of the authentic self in the present.

In the theory and practice of Gestalt, much time is spent on becoming aware of genuine body sensations, energy movement, and natural intuition. It also focuses on identifying and managing the resistances to change. These resistances to change keep us emotionally blocked and prevent us from creating the life we really want and need in the present.

The benefits of the Gestalt therapeutic process are having the freedom to make choices that are authentic to the self; the emergence of greater energy and aliveness; and the development of good physical and mental health- a transformed life not just based on survival, but life enhancement!
